View Full Version : Great News!
From PPA:
HR 2267 passed out of the Financial Services Committee on a vote of 41 yes and 22 no! Thanks poker players for all your support. We'll update everyone soon on next steps.
So now the next phase of the battle begins.
I assume all US players here are PPA members, but if not PLEASE join: theppa.org.
Our right to play online poker has been tenuous for some time now. Don't assume that things will just "work out." Defend your right to play.
Since im not keeping up with it, what exactly is that bill and what does it say?

The bill is the first real legislation aimed at Licensing and Regulating Online Gambling in general and Poker specifically. It will serve to clear the air on what is and is not permissible. It will probably result in some new taxes for successful players who currently volunteer taxes after big wins.
Primarily however, it brings online poker into the mainstream.
One of the things it'll do is prevent you from causing your bank or other financial institution from breaking the law. Those of you in the US who have deposited to a poker since June 1st will have technically done this. Since the implementation of UIGEA on that date it has been illegal for banks etc to process such transactions. The only thing that has saved US players to date is that nobody has figured out how to implement the legislation consistently, but give the DoJ long enough and they will.

To me it is just stupid that we even need legislation in the first place. When do you suppose the government will allow us to act like grownups and do things responsibly? It's my money and if I choose to gamble with some of it, leave me be. I drink too so when is big brother going to put a breathalyzer on my shot glass to tell me when I've had too much? The bottom line is government wants to legislate this so they can get their cut plain and simple. Maybe it's just me but I think we may have a couple of more important issues out there than whether or not we gamble on line.
P.S. I am a member of PPA
Basically agree with you, Dave. The only reason I support any kind of legislation now is to clear up the mess created by the existing legislation of the UIGEA.
