View Full Version : Thinking Out Every Street. Anyone play it Different

I am an aggressive poker player. Let me be plain about that, I am a TAG, tight-aggressive-aggressive. According to Poker_Edge I fluctuate in their ratings between a bomb and a shark depending on whether or not my VPIP is a hair above or below 20%. Sometimes my aggressive nature can make it easier for people to trap me, but 90% of the time my aggression is warranted. That being said, i will create a large empty space on this post so you hopefully do not see the next street played before considering the current one. Think the hand out each street.

As always all comments welcome. This is LIMIT Holdem .50/$1 so no replies about pot size bets LOL.

Only 2nd hand in of the session so no reads and all these players i had either not played before or not yet had notes on so no reads. $2.75 in the pot when it gets back to me. I'm in the small blind and getting nearly 4-1 to call with a suited connector so this call is pretty automatic.

There were already 3 in the pot counting the BB when Button raised. I flop the idiot end of the straight and I'm not giving anyone a free anything to draw to a larger straight. Button caps here. I know he can't have the high end of the straight because no one would be stupid enough to raise a QJ suited or not with 3 already in. AA, KK, QQ and he's betting it strong. Must not believe I have the straight or thinks I'm betting the draw and wants it to cost me all it can.

Hmmmm, he capped the turn. Now I know he doesn't believe I have the straight, but if he's holding a big pocket pair they will usually slow down on the turn fearing a set. He's not slowing. I'm now thinking he might have raised with 88, 99 or 10-10. I still have him beat though and I now have picked up a flush draw, but it doesn't really matter since I know my straight has him beat outright.

Damn, a paired board, not what I wanted. Well, I'm not putting him on a boat and i still think he has a large pocket pair. if I'm wrong, so be it. in limit all it is is a couple of more bets, nothing more. He is still acting like a player with a nut straight, but a button raise with QJ? No way!

Button had Jhttp://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/heart.gif, Qhttp://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/spade.gif (straight, Queen high).

Well, what do you know about that. Unbelievable.

Hero had 6http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/diamond.gif, 7http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/diamond.gif (flush, ten high).
Outcome: Hero won $24

Flop the straight. Think it out every street. Use logic and every bit of knowledgeI have and low and behold, I needed runner runner to hit the flush and take the hand down.

Be honest now, what did you put him on?

I would have just called the re-raise on the flop, and checked the turn calling his bet. I am one of those that will play it more consevative unless I have the nuts. You got lucky on the river catching your flush and would have lost a big pot if not for it. They say its better to win a small pot than lose a big one.

Poker Edge has me as a Redfish. Two years ago I was like you a Shark/Bomb but found myself getting KO'd more often due to over aggressiveness. . Although I had success, I changed my style a bit and now find myself lasting longer and cashing more often. Its still a work in progress, and Im starting to think I might do better playng in higher buy in games, where players don't throw around thier money so easily

When he raised and then capped the flop, I put him on Q,J or a set. There's no other reason for him tho bet like that unless he's just trying to get you to lay down you hand which rarely happens in limit. I probably still would have played the hand, but I wouldn't have been as aggressive as you were. I would have stuck to check calling throughout the hand.

I think you overplayed every street. Without knowing the tendencies of button it's hard to get a read, but it's fairly standard to button raise limpers to take control of the hand and many people do it fairly wide. Calling 1.5 in the SB isn't at all automatic for me. Your big problem is the action isn't closed. This could easily cost you another 2 bets if UTG was open-limping with a monster. Given the size of the pot on the flop you're getting to the river with this hand but once you get raised on the flop I think you should get there as cheaply as possible.
